LEDs or by their proper name Light Emitting Diodes are not strictly lamps. They are a semi-conducting light source first introduced in the 1960s as a simple and effective electronic illuminated indicator for many uses. They were mostly Red and emitted very low intensity lighting. Continued worldwide research and development over the past 50 years has resulted in LEDs now emitting very high brightness in both the visible and other energy wave lengths. The great interest in reducing our carbon footprint has spurred massive research and development in LEDs as a viable replacement for our common incandescent lighting. Their performance is growing experientially and costs are being reduced rapidly as production grows worldwide.
The vast array of colours, directional control and lighting performance are determined during manufacture by various components and techniques. However as in all things, the most efficient LEDs tend to be dearer than the lesser performing cheaper units.
On some pages of this catalogue we identify a higher performance LED with the name Cree. Cree Inc. produce the highest quality LEDs and set the standard for most white LEDs with very high luminous efficacy. LEDs are now a viable replacement for most existing incandescent lamps.
